Vasa Mihich is a renowned Los Angeles-based artist known for his sleek, colorful and captivating acrylic sculptures. He is a Senior Professor of Design at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he has taught color theory for many years. For nearly 50 years he has been working in acrylics, whether on canvas or through sculpture.
His sculptures, with their different geometric planes suspended in acrylic, are dynamic and endlessly fascinating.
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this impactful and impressive desktop sculpture. This is the first time we have handled a Vasa sculpture in this fascinating color and pattern.
“Electric Plaid” features a strong grid of electric canary yellow contrasted with auburn brown and suspended within a lime green rectangle.
As with the best of Mihich's work, the geometric pattern (and color) distorts as the viewer moves around the sculpture. In this case the unified grid slants and expands when viewed from the side, while revealing a surprising illumination of jade green.
This sculpture is a paradigm of Mihich’s ongoing investigation of light and color. Unique to this work is the absence of negative space that is otherwise present throughout his oeuvre. The inherent density of this piece calls attention to the intricate overlapping lines and intersections that alter depending on the viewer’s perspective. When viewed straight on, the intersections cause a , recalling the best Op Art painting arrangements.
After dedicating years of his career to education, Mihich now commits himself fully to his studio in Los Angeles where he continues to push the potential of acrylic sculpture.
